Keeping your camera clean inside and out is extremely important. Nothing frustrate me more than taking photos all day only to find out that my sensor wasn't perfectly clean and little dots show up all over my images. It doesn't matter how new your camera is, the second you expose your sensor when putting on a lens first can get in.
I was out shooting by a beach last year and as I was changing my lens a strong gust of wind threw sand in the air. I tried to be as quick as possible, but ended up having to stop what I was doing to clean my sensor. As terrifying as it sounds, it's really not that difficult.
